Opera originally developed in Europe, and within that tradition is a lighter genre called operetta, which features spoken dialogue and more accessible musical numbers. When operetta crossed over to America, it evolved with the addition of dance and show-style elements into what we now know as the musical. This July, I'll be conducting Wagner's opera The Flying Dutchman. The biggest difference between musicals and opera? The full-scale live orchestra! In this production, we'll have a 60+ member orchestra positioned in what's called the "orchestra pit," a space below the stage, and I'll be conducting right there. While the powerful arias and choruses performed by world-class singers on stage are a big part of opera's charm, today I'd like to share a glimpse of the overture rehearsal from the pit.
